Keyboardist Keith Emerson died on March 10 due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the Los Angeles coroner’s official confirmed on Tuesday, according to the Associated Press. He was 71.
L.A. coroner’s spokesman Ed Winter ruled Emerson’s death a suicide after an autopsy proved the late rock star shot himself in the head. Winter also stated Emerson had a heart condition.
He was found on March 11 in the early hours with one gunshot wound to the head. Santa Monica Police previously investigated the death as self-inflicted.
Emerson was one third of the sixties rock group Emerson, Lake and Palmer, with singer Greg Lake and drummer Carl Palmer. The band confirmed Emerson’s death on their Facebook page.
“We regret to announce that Keith Emerson died last night at his home in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, aged 71. We ask that the family’s privacy and grief be respected,” the post read.
