Broad City Stars ‘Not Trying to Make a Political Statement’ with Hillary Clinton Cameo

Hillary Clinton’s much-publicized cameo appearance on the third season of Broad City will air this week on the Comedy Central series.

“This Wednesday is Hillary’s episode,” star and co-creator Abbi Jacobson announced during a panel at the South by Southwest Festival festival in Austin, Texas on Saturday morning.

In the episode, which will also feature appearances from former Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon as well as Saturday Night Live alum Rachel Dratch and Emmy winner Alan Alda, Ilana (played by Ilana Glazer) goes to work for Clinton’s campaign.

“That’s half the episode. As we were starting, we were like, let’s just ask her. It took a long time to ask her,” Jacobson said. According to the stars, the show used a multi-pronged approach to getting to Clinton, including enlisting help from executive producer Amy Poehler.

Asked by an audience member if they were trying to make a political statement by having Clinton in the episode as opposed to Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, Clinton’s top opponent for the Democratic nomination for president, the stars said no.

“We were not trying to make a statement, to be honest,” Jacobson said. “We wrote season 3 a year ago, at this point. That’s not our show really: Let’s make a political stance here. It was really more that this is something Ilana’s character would do. Hillary, even regardless of where we stand – and we love Hillary – is such an iconic figure. These girls being around her is not an everyday thing. That’s how we felt being around her. It was like, ‘Oh, this is a different world.’”

Added Glazer, “Because she’s this icon, we’re trying to make really good TV. I think you’ll watch the episode and think it’s a really great episode of TV.”

Clinton’s cameo was first revealed last year, when photos from the episode were released online. “We were writing this very specific episode, and we actually wrote it where she didn’t even need to be in it,” Jacobson told EW in January. “And then it was really crazy that she was into it, and so it became even more heightened when she was actually a part of it.”

“It was just such an unbelievable honor to meet her,” Glazer said during the same interview. “She’s never done a scripted show like this, and it was wild. It was truly wild. She was wild. She was so warm and personable, and the depth of the person to have that inviting air but then to also [have just had a] meeting with Barack … this person is layered deep.”

Clinton’s episode airs Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET on Comedy Central.
