A 2-year-old girl in Sacramento County, Calif., is in critical condition after authorities say she shot herself in the head inside a home on Monday.
Authorities said two women were at the home when law enforcement responded to a 911 call about the incident, and detectives are now investigating the shooting, the Los Angeles Times reported on Monday night. At the time, investigators were still awaiting a search warrant to look inside the home.
“We don’t have a crystal ball,” Sacramento County Sheriff’s Sgt. Tony Turnbull said. “We can’t go off the initial 911 call.”
Turnbull said the incident is a reminder to securely store firearms, an issue that has come up repeatedly in the United States in recent years.
The Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund, a nonprofit that aims to reduce gun violence, reported that there have been at least 46 unintentional shootings by a child in 2016. The group tracks all shootings in which a person aged 17 or under accidentally fires a gun and harms or kills someone.
