PBS will air a documentary film that focuses on the hit Broadway show Hamilton this fall, executives said Monday.
The public broadcasting network announced during the Television Critics Association press tour that it would debut Hamilton’s America as part of its Great Performances series.
The documentary will provide “intimate access” to Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical, which uses rap and hip-hop to tell the story of Alexander Hamilton’s rise to power during the American Revolution.
It will also take a look at the two years leading up to the show’s arrival on Broadway and include interviews with experts and prominent personalities involved with the show, as well as new footage of the New York City production.
“PBS is thrilled to give viewers an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at this sensational—and sold out—Broadway musical,” said Beth Hoppe, the chief programming executive and general manager of general audience programming at PBS. “With this level of access to Lin-Manuel Miranda and his team, PBS continues to live up to our mission of giving viewers a backstage pass and a front row seat to the arts.”
