The only thing better than one evil queen is two, especially when they’re played by Emily Blunt and Charlize Theron, teaming up to spread fear and darkness throughout the land.
Following the release of four new character posters, the new trailer for The Huntsman: Winter’s War has dropped, teasing what happened before and after Snow White came along. Theron and Chris Hemsworth are both reprising their roles as Queen Ravenna and the huntsman Eric from 2012’s Snow White and the Huntsman, but Winter’s War introduces two new major players: Ravenna’s icy sister Freya (Blunt) and Eric’s long-lost love, Sara (Jessica Chastain, who is in full medieval warrior mode as she declares, “I never miss”).
Before Ravenna was defeated by Snow White, she stood by as Freya was betrayed and fled into the wilderness, where she built an icy palace and amassed an army of killer huntsmen. Eric and Sara were her two most beloved warriors, until they fell in love and she banished them. Years later, after learning that her sister has been defeated, Freya seeks to reclaim Ravenna’s Magic Mirror, only to find that it can help to resurrect her sister. Together, the pair team up to start a new reign of terror, as only evil queen sisters can.
Shawshank Redemption director Frank Darabont was initially attached to direct The Huntsman, but he left the project in January, citing creative differences. Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, who was nominated for a visual effects Oscar for the original Snow White and the Huntsman as a visual effects supervisor, took over shortly after.
The Huntsman: Winter’s War hits theaters on April 22.
