Adele’s first single in three years continues to set records. In addition to becoming the first song to sell at least 1 million downloads in a week and breaking Taylor Swift’s video record for single-day views, “Hello” joins Elton John’s “Candle in the Wind” as the only other song to move at least 1 million copies in a seven-day span.
In the week ending Oct. 29, the British singer’s latest track sold 1.1 million downloads, per Billboard. John’s live version of the 1973 hit, as a tribute to Princess Diana, spent two weeks with higher sales than “Hello,” in 1997. The song sold 3.4 million copies in its inaugural week and 1.2 million in the following seven days. The knighted Brit performed the song at Diana’s funeral in September of that year.
“Hello” debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 after dropping Oct. 23, making the single her fourth to top the charts. Adele’s forthcoming album 25 will be released Nov. 20.
