Morning Must Reads: October 6

4 minute read

Jeb Bush returns to Iowa for a three-day swing as he hopes to regain his footing in the Hawkeye State. His campaign released a new video Tuesday morning titled, ‘Why I’m Running,‘ quoting Bush saying, “It’s not about yapping, it’s not about talking. It’s about doing,.” Chris Christie has been in public life for two decades, but he’s hoping to sell himself as an outsider to New Hampshire voters this week, as he seeks to draw a contrast to his work in New Jersey and congressional dysfunction in Washington. Marco Rubio is touting the “sharing economy” in New York, after devoting an entire chapter in his campaign book to “making America safe for Uber.”

Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman returned the favor to Jason Chaffetz, his former chief of staff who endorsed Mitt Romney over his former boss in 2012, calling the Speaker of the House candidate a “self-promoter” in a tweet late Monday.

Hillary Clinton is going on offense against House Republicans weeks before she is set to testify before the House Benghazi Committee, using House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s comments highlighting the political toll the investigation is taking on Clinton in her first national television ad. It follows Clinton’s angry response to a question about the investigation earlier Monday in an interview with “The Today Show,” in which Clinton accused Republicans of “exploiting” the deaths of four Americans for political gain.

Outgoing Speaker John Boehner sets the date for the election of his replacement. President Obama eyes an extension of the U.S. troop commitment in Afghanistan. And something about a “Florida Man” and a goat’s blood.

Sound Off

“This committee was set up, as they have admitted, for the purpose of making a partisan, political issue out of the deaths of four Americans. I would have never done that! And if I were president—and there were Republicans or Democrats who were thinking about that—I would have done everything to shut it down.”— Hillary Clinton on the Today Show regarding the House Benghazi Committee

“I did sacrifice a goat. I know that’s probably a quibble in the mind of most Americans. I sacrificed an animal to the god of the wilderness … Yes, I drank the goat’s blood.” — Libertarian Florida Senate candidate Augustus Sol Invictus, who has sparked a civil war in that state party, to the Associated Press on a pagan ritual he engaged in after returning from a trip to the Mojave Desert
