Trevor Noah’s tenure as host of The Daily Show is sure to be packed with bits on the 2016 election, and his segment ribbing the candidates on Tuesday night was a promising first glance at how he’ll cover the race.
Noah focused on the ridiculous ways politicians and celebrities interact during the election season. He first played a clip of Marco Rubio talking about his taste in rap and his disapproval of the violent rivalry between the East Coast and West Coast hip hop scenes. “Oh, really?” Noah said, “You don’t think Biggie and Tupac should have killed each other, really?” He then turned his sights on Ben Carson, who has found an admirer in Kanye West and says he has a lot of respect for the rapper—but has previously gone on the record saying that hip-hop culture is degrading society. Finally he rolled footage of Lena Dunham’s interview with Hillary Clinton, in which the two joked about a viral video of Lenny Kravitz’s pants ripping, revealing his genitals. “I’ll look for that,” Clinton said, looking intrigued.
