Look out: Apple has concocted a strange new symbol for its emoji library—that set of fun digital stickers that often accompanies electronic communications nowadays.

The tech giant calls its new ideogram “eye in speech bubble,” notes Jeremy Burge, creator of emojipedia, a site dedicated to all things emoji, who first pointed it out on his personal Tumblr blog. Indeed, the symbol looks just like that: a dilated peeper set against a black chat balloon.

The new emoji appears in beta versions of Apple’s upcoming operating system upgrades, including previews of iOS 9.1 and OS X 10.11.1. Strangely though, the ideogram was not designed by the Unicode Authority, the organization that officially creates new emoji.

“To a casual observer, this appears to be just another emoji – one of many planned for the iOS 9.1 emoji update,” Burge writes, referencing an impending roll-out that includes new debuts such as symbols for tacos, burritos, and unicorns. “But the strange thing about this character (which Apple calls “eye in speech bubble”) is that it’s not a standard Unicode addition. It can’t be found in Unicode 1.1, or any other version right through to the Unicode 9.0 candidates.”

                        To their surprise, buyers in some housing markets are finding that they're no longer in the power position. The reason is simple: too many bidders and not enough homes.
                        
                        A growing number of shoppers are on the hunt, confident that the market has hit bottom, say brokers. Yet many would-be sellers are staying on the sidelines, either because they're underwater or because prices are still painfully low.

                        In June the number of houses listed for sale nationwide dropped 24% compared with the year prior, sending the supply of homes relative to buying activity down to levels not seen since 2006.
                        
                        That's led to some stiff competition among buyers, says Sin-Yi Chao Lambertson, a broker in Glendora, Calif.: "I've had listings get 45 offers."
                        
                        As the economy improves, the supply of homes should bounce back. If you're in the market now, though, and want to ensure yours is the winning bid, take these steps:
                        
                        <strong>Size up your town.</strong> First you'll need to determine whether you could be in for a bidding war. Rising price tags are a sign that sellers are gaining ground, but prices often lag the market.

                        Two other stats, available on real estate site Zillow, can mean an area's heating up: a drop in the percentage of homes with list price cuts, and an increasing ratio of sales to asking prices.
                        
                        <strong>Don't skimp on credit. </strong>With many sellers worried about deals falling through, you'll need the bank's blessing right away. Don't waste time on prequalification, which is an estimate of how much you might be able to borrow.
                        
                        "When multiple offers come in, I'll toss out anything that's just prequalified," says Teri Herrera, a broker in Redmond, Wash. Pre-approval based on your credit, income, and assets is better, and full credit approval, which goes through the bank's underwriting department, is best.
                        
                        <strong>Get a veteran on your side. </strong>Finding an experienced agent is even more important in a competitive market; you'll want a pro who specializes in working with buyers and who knows the local players and pricing trends.
                        
                        "One of your first questions should be whether the agent has experience in multiple-offer situations," says Herrera, adding that it's also important to get details on the deals she's closed recently. A good agent can help you determine whether a home is fairly priced, advise you on how much to offer -- and back up her counsel with data and examples.
                        
                        <strong>Make a clean offer. </strong>When you take the leap, remember that "the best offer isn't always the one with the best price," says George Miller, the Johnsons' Sarasota agent. "It's the one with the fewest hassles and outs for the buyer."
                        
                        Make yours as straightforward as possible. If it's contingent on selling an existing home, for example, you're unlikely to win a bidding war. Set on a certain closing date? So how did it come about? Apple appears to have crafted the emoji by combining the “eye” with that of the “left speech bubble” through the same method that the company has used to create its more well-known sets of “family” emoji. The technique uses a concatenation character known as “zero width joiner” which, when deployed, links separate standard emoji into a single symbol. For example, one can group the “man,” “woman,” and younger children symbols into various combos, such as same-sexed couples.

Reddit users are currently brainstorming what the eye-bubble might mean. Some people have suggested that it could serve as a logo for iMessage, the company’s text messaging service. Other seem to think it could represent that a message has been read, like a read receipt.

Still others have proposed less likely suggestions, such relationships with Oculus, CBS, and the Illuminati.

Asked for his thoughts, Burge told Fortune in a message on Tumblr, “I don’t see why Apple would bother creating a logo for any feature as an emoji, instead of a graphic in the system – like all other icons, logos and symbols are,” he wrote. “Creating this symbol as an emoji indicates that whatever this is to be used for, requires it to be used in a text-only field of some kind.”

“I really don’t know!” he added.

One allure of the emoji repertoire is that its members can retain multiple, sometimes surprise meanings. Regardless of what Apple might decree, these symbols can mean whatever users decide they mean. (Exhibit A: the eggplant emoji.)

Interestingly, emoji has begun to reshape the language of business. No, really it has.
