The previous glimpse of Empire’s sophomore season was a short trailer with random shots of the Lyon family and limited voiceover. Fox has now released the first, bona-fide trailer for the second season of the hip-hop drama. (Hakeem and his Hovertrax made this cut, too.)
Plot is easier to extract from this extended look. Andre seeks to remove his incarcerated dad Lucious as CEO of Empire Entertainment, and Cookie has designs on putting her eldest son in charge. But Lucious wants the musically inclined Jamal to take charge. Meanwhile, baby Hakeem and ‘Mal will only continue butting heads.
First looks are given two of the most notable guest stars: Oscar winner Marisa Tomei and Chris Rock.Tomei plays a venture capitalist named Mimi Whiteman, who appears to act on the patriarch’s behalf. “Lucious Lyon is Empire,” she asserts. “Without him, the company is nothing.” Rock is locked up with Lucious, but sadly nowhere to be seen during Lucious’ big-house recording session.
Watch the full trailer above. Empire season 2 arrives Sept. 23 at 9 p.m. ET on Fox.
