With the exception of the critical flop Serena, the combination of Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper usually spells good things on the silver screen. Add to the mix David O. Russell, who directed the pair in Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle—which earned a combined 18 Oscar nominations—and it’s worth paying attention.
Though you wouldn’t know it from trailer, which plays like a montage of a life going rapidly awry, Joy tells the story of real-life single mother and Miracle Mop inventor Joy Mangano, played by Lawrence. Cooper stars opposite Lawrence as an executive at the Home Shopping Network, which ultimately buys Mangano’s company. The trailer has Joy getting thrown behind bars, getting very angry very often and shooting a shotgun, proving there’s drama aplenty wherever you look—even in the invention and sale of home cleaning products.
Co-starring Robert de Niro, Diane Ladd, Virginia Madsen and Isabella Rossellini, Joy hits theaters on Christmas Day.
