Auction Set for Olympic Torch Carried by Caitlyn Jenner in 1984

The 1984 Summer Olympic Torch carried by Caitlyn Jenner, who had identified as Bruce until coming out as transgender in April, is set to be auctioned off at an estimated price of over $20,000.

The 24-inch torch will be offered by Heritage Auctions in Chicago during its Platinum Sports Auction on July 30, the auction house announced on Tuesday. The seller is Bob Lorsch, a Los Angeles philanthropist and entrepreneur who recruited Jenner to run part of the Lake Tahoe, Nevada, leg of the torch relay, which Lorsch had organized.

Jenner, a 1976 Olympic gold medalist in decathlon, was “America’s most celebrated Olympian” at the time of the 1,000 meter run, the auction house said. As Jenner told People in a 1984 interview, she participated because she was impressed with how the host city, Los Angeles, had handled the Olympics.

“I hate to run,” she said. “I don’t run. I can’t stand running. And anyway I know people will laugh at me when they see my knees. But it’s for a good cause, so I’ll do it.”
