Amy Schumer: I’m Proud to Not Look Like a ‘Malnourished Bird’

From sexism in Hollywood to her weight, Amy Schumer is not afraid to speak her mind.

“It’s very therapeutic for me to be like, ‘Yes, I’m not going to look like a malnourished bird,’ and I like speaking to that, as well as speaking to my work and what I’m doing,” the comedian told reporters at the press conference for her new film Trainwreck on Friday in Los Angeles.

In the movie (which hits theaters July 17), Schumer plays a serial dater with what some have perceived as having an act-like-a-man-attitude. Not so, says Schumer.

“A lot of people have asked me if I intended to kind of flip the gender roles like I’m playing the guy, and that’s not been my experience at all,” she explained.

Instead, the actress drew from her personal experiences.”This is how I am and how a lot of girls are where the guy ends up being a little more sensitive and more invested. So the scene where I get high and then John [Cena’s] character looks through my phone, and then instead of comforting him I ask if I can leave – that did happen in my real life.”And when it came time to shoot a sex scene between Schumer and co-star Bill Hader, it actually might have been Trainwreck director Judd Apatow who was the most uncomfortable.”Judd was very embarrassed,” Hader said. “He was very shy when we did the real sex scene on the couch. He was like, ‘Okay, so today’s the big day. Okay, you guys it’s gonna be fun,’ and everyone was looking at the ground.”
