About half of the new, longer trailer for Scream Queens focuses on frightening sorority hazing—and then a decapitation signals a whole new type of terror.
Because of an edict from Jamie Lee Curtis’ dean, the cocktail-sipping mean girls in Kappas—led by Emma Roberts, rocking a ton of pastel—must take everyone who wants to join. “You’re about to get hazed harder than a suburban banquet hall during bat mitzvah season,” Roberts announces to the motley crew, which includes a girl who eats candle wax and Lea Michele. Then a girl’s head gets mowed off and someone in a red devil costume starts running around. Hey—at least Nick Jonas doesn’t seem fazed. (He also doesn’t wear a shirt.)
Creator Ryan Murphy told Entertainment Weekly that Scream Queens is “Heathers meets Friday the 13th,” and the comment rings especially true based on the trailer. Not only are the bitchy Kappas called “The Chanels,” but the visual of a girl with her head sticking out of the grass definitely has a Heathers feel to it.
