Lauren Bacall, Hollywood Legend, Dead at 89

Lauren Bacall, whose 1944 screen debut opposite future husband Humphrey Bogart in To Have and Have Not featured the immortal line, “You know how to whistle, don’t you, Steve? You just put your lips together and . . . blow,” has died. She was 89 years old. Bogart and Bacall married in 1945, a year after meeting on the set of To Have and Have Not (she was 20, he was 45), and they shared the screen in three more films, two of them—The Big Sleep and Key Largo—acknowledged classics.

Born Betty Joan Perske in the Bronx, Bacall starred in scores of movies, earned an honorary Oscar in 2009, won two Tony awards on Broadway and worked as recently as 2013, lending her voice to the English-dubbed version of the 2012 French animated film, Ernest & Celestine.
