Russia’s Animated The Snow Queen Gets Third Installment

Russia’s successful animated franchise The Snow Queen is getting a third installment.

Producer Wizart Animation has green-lit The Snow Queen 3 with a budget of $15 million. An international rollout is slated for 2016.

Hollywood voice talent is due to be announced in the fall at AFM, producer Yuri Moskvin said. The voice cast for Snow Queen 2 included Sean Bean (The Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones) as General Arrog, Sharlto Copley (Maleficent, District 9, Elysium) as troll Orm, Bella Thorne (Amityville: The Awakening) as Gerda and Isabelle Fuhrman (The Hunger Games) as Alfida.

The decision to produce a third movie comes after the success of the first two feature-length cartoons in the franchise by the Moscow- and Voronezh-based animation studio. The Snow Queenand Snow Queen 2 have reached combined box-office revenue of $25 million, with more international releases due for both films this year.

Entertainment One has picked up U.S. and Canadian rights (English- and French-speaking) to the 3D Snow Queen 2, with winter 2015 releases scheduled.

“With each new project we are trying to go to a whole new level,” Moskvin said. “We are increasing the level of production and marketing, and bringing famous scriptwriters and cast on board.” He added that the original soundtrack for the latest installment of the franchise would be localized for some territories.

Wizart will also be shopping other new projects on the Croisette, offering pre-sales for Urfin and His Wooden Soldiers (by Melnitsa Animation) and the company’s own Sheep and Wolves.

Snow Queen, like Disney’s Frozen, is based on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic children’s tale.
