Read Taylor Swift’s Touching Note to a Fan Whose Mother Died

2 minute read

On Mother’s Day, a young woman named Kaileen wrote Taylor Swift a note on Tumblr about how the singer helped her recover from the death of her mother last year.

“For a while, I felt empty. But as you’ve done many times before, you filled that hole. You took me out of my sad place and made me happy,” Kaileen wrote. “And because of you, I got through something that was the hardest thing in the world for me. Today’s going to be another hard day, but I know with you on my side I can get through anything.”

Swift, who wrote about her own mother’s cancer diagnosis earlier this year, responded to Kaileen with her own touching post on Sunday:

Kaileen- I love you so much and can’t imagine what you must be feeling today. You’ve lived through my worst fear. I’m so sorry you can’t spend today with her. It’s not fair, and there’s no reason why you should feel okay about it. No one should ever expect you to feel normal today. I admire and respect your ability to put forth such a sunny, sweet disposition when you’ve been through something so dark and tragic so recently. I never would’ve guessed by your attitude or your posts. I never would’ve known if you hadn’t told me. Sending you a huge hug today. Gonna go get iced coffee and cheers to you. :)

In April, Swift told fans that her mother Andrea had cancer, but that her health and treatment plans would be kept private going forward.

“She wanted you to know because your parents may be too busy juggling everything they’ve got going on to go to the doctor, and maybe you reminding them to go get checked for cancer could possibly lead to an early diagnosis and an easier battle,” Swift wrote. “Or peace of mind in knowing that they’re healthy and there’s nothing to worry about. She wanted you to know why she may not be at as many shows this tour. She’s got an important battle to fight.”
