Grab your lottery tickets and a bucket of fried chicken from Mr. Cluck’s Chicken Shack, Lost fans.
As many Lost fans have pointed out—and already begun celebrating—Wednesday is a day that has been a decade in the making. The numbers that appeared on Hurley’s (Jorge Garcia) lottery ticket, 4 8 15 16 23 42, have been one of the show’s most enduring bits of mythology. And while today may not offer any further answers to the show’s still lingering questions, the numbers do correspond to a specific time today.
Dubbed Lost Day, all of the Numbers line up perfectly to a time today: 4:23:42 p.m. on April 8, 2015. 4 corresponds to the month, 8 to the day, 15 to the year, 16 to the hour (in military time), 23 to the minute, and 42 to the second.
The Numbers, which first appeared when Hurley won the lotto but found bad luck followed in their wake, became an integral part of the Lost mythology. Each number represented one of Jacob’s candidates to become the Island’s protector, which he determined via the degrees on a lighthouse mirror.
Of course, celebrating today probably won’t bring your life bad luck—or make you the possible protector of a magical island—but you don’t have to wait until the exact time to look back on Lost, as our own Jeff Jensen did earlier this year. So feel free to spend the day rewatching your favorite moments, buying lotto tickets with the Numbers, or venting your continued frustration about the mysteries that were never explained.
