TIME and Peter van Agtmael present ‘Disco Night Sept. 11’ at Photoville NYC 2013

This year, LightBox is proud to announce that we’re curating an exhibition at Photoville, the two-week-long festival of photography held on Brooklyn’s historic waterfront. Now in its second year, Photoville bills itself as “a pop-up village of freight containers transformed into temporary exhibition spaces,” and includes lectures, nightly projections, workshops and a beer garden.

Inside our 20 foot-long exhibition space, we’ll be presenting work from Peter van Agtmael’s forthcoming book Disco Night Sept 11, a look at America’s wars over the past decade and the international and domestic consequences of the conflict. The book, published by Red Hook Editions, includes photographs taken on assignment for TIME as well as the latest film produced by TIME’s new documentary film unit, Red Border Films.

“I hope the act of making this book does not romanticize violence. If I found any truth in war, I found that in the end, everyone has their own truth,” says van Agtmael.

The exhibition features large, 3-foot color transparencies on mounted lightboxes. In addition, Bobby Henline, a comedian featured in the film being screened at our show, will be performing a stand-up routine on Thursday and Saturday at 8:30 p.m. in Photoville’s outdoor beer garden.

And on Saturday, Sept. 28, Photoville will host Slideluck XVII, a multimedia slideshow curated by TIME’s Director of Photography Kira Pollack and paired with a potluck dinner. Kicking off at 7 p.m., guests are encouraged to bring a dish of food to share or can purchase dinner from various food-trucks onsite.
