Fresh off the announcement that TBS has ordered a scripted series from Samantha Bee and her husband, Jason Jones, the network announced Thursday that Bee—who, like Jones, has spent years as a correspondent on The Daily Show—will star in a new program where she can “apply her smart and satirical point of view to current and relevant issues.”
“We’re thrilled to have Sam join Jason at TBS and really make this a family affair. We actually have their kids coming in next week to pitch us animation,” executive vice president of original programming for TBS Brett Weitz said in the release. (Jones is set to star in the family comedy he created with Bee.) “Like her fans around the country, we absolutely adore everything about Sam, from her straight-faced sarcasm and ruthless wit to her uncanny ability to mine comedy gold from just about any awkward situation. After watching Sam’s work for years, we knew that her distinctive humor and talent belong at the front of her own show.”
The show, which she and Jones will both executive produce, is still in the nascent stages. Given the ex-Daily Show staffers who have been given their own platforms in the last year, it seems likely that Bee’s new gig could be in the vein of John Oliver and Larry Wilmore’s respective programs—where each former Daily correspondent is given free rein to mock the news as they see fit.
