Police Chief Charlie Beck said during a news conference that the slide of the weapon had been “partially engaged,” which is “indicative of a struggle over a weapon,” according to the Los Angeles _Times_, which has reviewed a second video of the deadly altercation. Police were responding to a suspected robbery call and pursued a man [known](http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/03/02/us-usa-california-police-idUSKBN0LY0C920150302) by some as “Africa” in the Skid Row area, home to one of the largest populations of homeless people in the country.
