The Walking Dead returns from its winter hiatus on Sunday, but the Powers That Be have bestowed upon us all a sneak peek of its highly anticipated return.
SPOILERS abound for all those needing to play catch-up with their DVRs!
The latter half of season 5 opens as grimly as The Walking Dead ever does – with Beth’s burial.
Her sister, Maggie (Lauren Cohan), is seen sobbing as Father Gabriel (Seth Gillam) recites 2 Corinthians – 4:18-5:1 – over Beth’s grave.
However, the clip also gives viewers an idea of the forward momentum for the rest of the season – Noah (Tyler James Williams) tells Rick (Andrew Lincoln) that he and Beth had planned to head for a place outside Richmond, Virginia.
Fans of the comic series will note that the place they’re heading to is likely the Alexandria Safe-Zone in Alexandria, Virginia, which is about six miles out from Washington, D.C. – where everyone was headed before Eugene (Josh McDermitt) exposed himself as a fraud.
“If it works out, it’s the last long trip we have to make,” Rick tells the group. “What if it isn’t around anymore?” asks Glenn (Steven Yeun).
Rick replies with what may as well be the slogan for The Walking Dead: “Then we keep going.”
The Walking Dead returns on Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
