Widely considered the first modern fashion photographer, Edward Steichen became magazine publisher Condé Nast’s top photographer in 1923. This 1924 portrait of actress Gloria Swanson, from “Edward Steichen: In High Fashion, the Condé Nast Years 1923–1937,” is on display at the Photographers’ Gallery in London Oct. 31 to Jan. 18.
