SURPASSED

The 17,000 mark on the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the first time the stock-market index has ever closed above that landmark. The jump came after good news on jobs growth in June.

DIED

Former Senator Alan Dixon, of Illinois, at 86. Dixon, known as Al the Pal, was elected to the Senate in 1980 and served two terms before losing in a primary to Carol Moseley Braun.

RETURNED

Forty-one asylum seekers intercepted while trying to reach Australia, to Sri Lanka. The U.N.’s refugee commission said it was unclear whether the process complied with international law.

The murder trial against Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius, after the defense rested. The trial will resume in a few weeks with closing arguments to be heard in early August.
