Emma Stone Says to ‘Speak Out and Be Brave’ About Trump’s Presidency

1 minute read

The results of the U.S. presidential election have galvanized Emma Stone.

The star of the upcoming Los Angeles musical La La Land told CNN at the 8th Annual Governors Awards hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences last weekend that Hillary Clinton’s loss to Donald Trump was “incredibly painful.” But she says she wants to channel that pain into action.

“I think it’s a real wake-up call and chance for us to all unite and do the very, very best we can to speak out and be brave,” Stone said.

Her La La Land director Damien Chazelle echoed Stone’s hopeful message. “If us artists here keep making our art and making stuff and stay creative and stay productive, that’s my way of coping. And maybe that can actually help,” he added.

La La Land, which pairs Stone with Ryan Gosling, opens Dec. 9.
