The final results of the Australian federal elections are hanging in the balance as vote counting resumed on Monday, with neither the ruling conservative coalition nor the Labor party able to secure enough seats to form a majority government.
It was hoped a decisive break was around the corner for a country that has been embroiled in political turmoil marked by a rapid succession of Prime Ministers – four in the past three years – but instead the polls have served up a cliff-hanger, Reuters reports, with the possibility of a hung parliament.
The final results are not expected for days, leading to a power struggle as both Prime Minster Malcolm Turnbull and the opposition Labor party scramble for support from key independents and smaller parties.
The results so far show the Labor party winning 67 seats, the coalition 65, the independents claiming four and the Greens party one.
