Lena Dunham Says Kanye West’s ‘Famous’ Video Makes Her Feel ‘Sad and Unsafe and Worried’

3 minute read

Kanye West practically demanded commentary on his new ‘Famous’ video, which features nude wax figures of celebrities, like Amber Rose, Kim Kardashian West and Donald Trump, all piled into bed together. Even though West requested a lawsuit from those involved, few celebrities have commented. But Girls creator Lena Dunham stepped up to offer her thoughts.

“The Famous video is one of the more disturbing ‘artistic’ efforts in recent memory,” Dunham wrote <a href="

She referenced recent events—like Brock Turner’s light sentence for sexual assault and Bill Cosby’s public trials—and said that West’s video evokes similar messages. “Now I have to see the prone, unconscious, waxy bodies of famous women, twisted like they’ve been drugged and chucked aside at a rager? It gives me such a sickening sense of dis-ease.”

“Seeing a woman I love like Taylor Swift (f-ck that one hurt to look at, I couldn’t look), a woman I admire like Rihanna or Anna, reduced to a pair of waxy breasts made by some special effects guy in the Valley, it makes me feel sad and unsafe and worried for the teenage girls who watch this and may not understand that grainy roving camera as the stuff of snuff films,” Dunham wrote.

She also commented on the lack of critique happening around the video: “I hesitated a lot about saying anything cuz [sic] I figured the thinkpieces would come pouring in. But I didn’t see this angle being explored as much as I had hoped. It’s weird to feel like you’re watching alone. I bet I’m not.”
