Donald Trump has been banned from appearing on NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers after he banned the Washington Post from covering his presidential campaign.
Host Seth Meyers made the announcement Tuesday night, saying Trump had hit a “new low” following his remarks in the aftermath of Sunday’s deadly shooting at an Orlando nightclub—comments that the Post also criticized.
“As for the Washington Post, we here at Late Night believe in freedom of the press and therefore have decided to stand in solidarity with them,” Meyers said. “So as long as the Washington Post is banned from Donald Trump’s campaign, Donald Trump will be banned from ever coming on this show.”
The shooting left victims 49 dead, to which Trump responded by blaming Islamic terrorists and reasserting his strategy to ban Muslims from entering the country. He later criticized President Barack Obama, saying “there’s something going on” because he didn’t mention “radical Islam” in his address to the nation after the shooting.
Meyers dismissed the billionaire’s statement as racist. “To be clear, this is bigotry, plain and simple,” Meyers said. “To claim that any group of people – immigrants or anyone else – has anything in common with a terrorist murderer based simply on their ethnic background or religion or where they’re from is dangerous and wrong.”
