Sherpa Is First Person to Climb Mount Everest After Earthquake

1 minute read

A Sherpa is the first person to climb Mount Everest since earthquakes ravaged the area last year, after he led a group of nine Sherpas to the world’s tallest peak from the Nepali side.

The Nepal Mountaineering Association says that Sherra Gyalgen Sherpa reached the top of Mount Everest on Wednesday to make the historic feat, according to Reuters.

The successful climb was the first in three years after a fatal avalanche in 2014 and the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that left some 9,000 people dead and Nepal devastated.

Some 289 climbers and their guides were stationed at different camps along Everest waiting for a opportunity to make their final ascent, according to mountain officials.
