Tuesday night featured this week’s first new episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers. Monday’s show had been canceled at the last minute, but for the best of reasons: his wife unexpectedly went into labor for their first child on Sunday. So, naturally, Meyers opened Tuesday’s show with the story of his son’s birth. It involved a contractions-tracking app, screaming out of an Uber, and nurses wearing bunny ears, among other things.
The baby came two weeks early, which took Meyers and his wife by surprise. They were going about their normal Sunday routine, and only after Meyers’ wife, Alexi Ashe Meyers, complained about back pain multiple times did they realize what was going down. Meyers downloaded a contractions app (“because I’m on top of it”) and eventually realized they needed to get to the hospital. They were aided by a helpful doorman and one terrified Uber driver.
“I will say, to Tariq, he did an incredible job, he kept this cool so well. And it was hard to keep your cool because one, we wanted to get there in a hurry, and two, my wife was on her knees in the backseat, holding on to me, and screaming out an open window,” Meyers said. “Screaming. And only in New York City could you drive that way and not have people say, ‘That woman’s being abducted.’ She would be screaming while we were stopped at stoplights, and people would just cross the street. My wife was screaming out the window, ‘I don’t like this!’ And I just feel like New Yorkers were walking by like, ‘It’s New York, nobody likes anything!’”
When they arrived at the admitting room, they found every nurse wearing bunny ears for Easter Sunday. This goofy occurrence was lost on Alexi (“She was at a place where bunny ears could not change her mood”), but cheered him up and sent a goofy vibe throughout the intense process in the delivery room.
“The minute it started, I couldn’t take my eyes off it. It’s the most fantastic thing,” Meyers said of the delivery. “I also couldn’t stop laughing. One, half the people in the room had bunny ears on. Two, I kept thinking back to all the times in the past year people had asked, ‘Are you ready for this?’ Watching it happen, I couldn’t help laughing like, ‘Who could be ready for this?’”
Meyers and his wife named their child Ashe Olsen Meyers, after the maiden names of his wife and mother, and not a former child star.
“A couple of people have said to us, ‘Do you think people will think you named him after Ashley Olsen?’” Meyers said. “And to them I have said no one will think that! Because I have long been a Mary-Kate guy!”
