La Bonne Biere reopened its doors on Friday, after five people were killed there in the Nov. 13 Paris attacks.
The cafe (whose name means “the good beer”) is the first of the Paris terror targets to resume service. In the attacks, two gunmen had started shooting as they approached the restaurant’s terrace, riddling the windows with bullet holes, the BBC reports.
A banner now hangs from a balcony over La Bonne Biere’s awning, reading “Je suis en terrasse” — or “I am on the terrace,” the phrase adopted by Parisians after the attack to show they would not be scared off their city’s streets. Diners filled in the seats of the cafe’s terrace after it reopened.
“We are going to start again, to bounce back. We have carried out some work and repainted the walls to wipe away the signs of this nightmare,” manager Audrey Bily said on Friday. “The Bonne Biere cafe was a place where people meet and exchanged and shared. That is what we want it to be again today.”
