Amy Giberson and Justin Pounders are happily in love after a year of dating, but the St. Petersburg, Florida couple can’t claim love at first sight.
Almost exactly a year after their first date, Giberson and Pounders discovered that they had known each other as kids, PEOPLE reports. And that’s not all: the two, both 33, realized they were actually childhood sweethearts at Sunshine Preschool 30 years ago.
“We were in the car and Justin casually mentioned that he loved my name because he had had a crush on a girl named Amy in his preschool,” Giberson told PEOPLE. “Then I joked to him, ‘Well, it’s not me, so I don’t want to hear about her.'”
When the two 32-year-olds, who matched on an online dating site, investigated further, they realized they were both at Sunshine Preschool at the same time. Pounders’ mother even found a photo of the two together from decades before.
“It was a quiet, bashful romance,” former teacher Diane Twar told PEOPLE. “They liked each other from afar, it was a young love, like a sweet crush, you know? They insisted on sitting next to each other in our school picture.”
