Rocky, the classic story of a long-odds boxer, only recently became a musical — but that doesn’t mean the original film didn’t have any music. Two songs —”Eye of the Tiger” and “Gonna Fly Now (Theme From Rocky)”—will forever be associated with training montages; the former from Rocky III and the latter from the first in the franchise.
So it’s no surprise that the musical-theater take on Rocky, which opened in New York City earlier this year to strong reviews, uses both of those songs. Yes, it’s a Broadway cast singing “Eye of the Tiger.”
The official cast recording comes out next week, so here’s your first chance to hear the show’s second training montage, which features “Eye of the Tiger” and “Gonna Fly Now”:
