Thinking Outside the Hospital

After noticing the black male customers at the Madison, Wis., barbershop where he got haircuts often talked about their health problems—but realizing many didn’t see doctors—Perry started the Men’s Health & Education Center inside the shop. Now clients can learn about high blood pressure, monitor diabetes and get flu shots with their trim. This year, a $300,000 grant from the University of Wisconsin will help him open other barbershop health centers. —Alice Park
