University of Wisconsin-Platteville

Platteville, WIwww.uwplatt.edu
The University of Wisconsin-Platteville is one of the fastest growing schools in the UW system, with an undergraduate population of about 8,000 students. The university is the product of a merger between a mining trade school and a teachers training college, and the legacies of both are still evident on campus. Over Homecoming weekend, for example, students light candles around a giant "M" that was built out of stones by mining students in the 1930s. Another legacy of the specialty in mining: Engineering is still the school's most popular academic program (although mining is no longer offered). Other popular degrees include agriculture, business, education, and criminal justice. The cost of a degree at UW-Platteville is well under $100,000, and graduates report competitive salaries. Around a quarter of students are from out-of-state, and the university has a special agreement to reduce the cost of out-of-state tuition for students from the neighboring states of Illinois and Iowa.
