Bowdoin College

Brunswick, MEwww.bowdoin.edu/
Bowdoin, an elite liberal arts college in coastal Maine, counts among its alumni such influencers as Netflix founder Reed Hastings and Harlem Children's Zone founder Geoffrey Canada. Although it is highly selective, rejecting nearly 90% of applicants, Bowdoin is test-optional, meaning applicants are not required to submit SAT or ACT scores. As part of the school's classic liberal arts approach, its some 1,800 students must do coursework in all of the major disciplines, including math, science, the arts, and the social sciences. Students can choose from over 30 traditional majors, as well as eight interdisciplinary ones, including chemical physics, English and theater, and math and economics. Bowdoin promises to provide grants to meet the entire demonstrated need of students who can't afford the full sticker price. As a result, most Bowdoin graduates leave school without much student debt. Also keeping costs down: About 88% of freshmen graduate within four years, one of the highest rates in the country. Bowdoin's Polar Bears field 36 Division III sports teams. To encourage students to take full advantage of opportunities to kayak, hike, and ski in Maine, Bowdoin lends outdoor gear for free. The college's dining service, which has its own organic garden and butcher, consistently ranks at or near the top nationwide. One social highlight of the year is the annual Lobster Bake, at which students chow down on the local delicacy.
