Bethel University

Saint Paul, MNwww.bethel.edu
Bethel University, founded as a Baptist seminary in 1871, now offers a variety of degree programs to its 5,600 students. But it remains a Christian school that teaches with an evangelical perspective. The university's 245-acre campus is located in Arden Hills, Minn., about 20 minutes from downtown St. Paul. The student body includes 3,000 undergrads, while the rest are seminary or grad students. In addition to organizing optional worship services, and running prayer groups, Campus Ministries sends students on mission trips to work with local churches and agencies throughout the world. Students repair homes in Appalachia, dig trenches in Honduras, and spread the gospel in Belize. The school is about 60% female and roughly three-quarters of students are white. Bethel recently launched a new two-year BUILD (Bethel University Inclusive Learning and Development) program for students with intellectual disabilities. BUILD students participate in independent study programs and internships. The school offers 18 Division III athletic programs. But many students choose more leisurely alternatives: the 9-hole frisbee golf course on campus, or the mile-long hiking trail that runs along the perimeter of the school and passes alongside Lake Valentine.
