Business: More Ramblers

American Motors’ President George Romney, who has increased productionsix times this model year to keep up with the demand for thefast-selling Rambler (TIME, Dec. 8), last week announced another boost.Orders are coming in so fast that Rambler will increase its capacityfrom 330,000 to 440,000 cars annually. To complete the expansion beforethe 1960 model year, Romney will spend $10,150,000 on Rambler’sfacilities at Milwaukee and Kenosha, Wis., add at least 4,500 to thepresent payroll of some 18,000. With sales now running at a rate ofmore than 300,000 a year, Romney has upped his sights, expects to reachan annual rate of 400,000 by late fall.
