U.S. citizens are now too busy andtoo prosperous for suicide, Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. reported.During 1943, U.S. suicides dropped from the average 19,000 of pre-PearlHarbor years to a mere 13,000. Sharpest decline in the urge toself-destruction (a 35% drop) was among insured women in the 20-to-25age group.

Metropolitan reached the traditional conclusion that a falling suiciderate indicates: 1) a business boom, 2) high civilian morale.
