Despite being one of the most famous women in America, Hillary Clinton remains an enigma to many. Over a career spanning decades, she has been a student activist, the First Lady of Arkansas and then the United States, a U.S. Senator, Secretary of State and the first female major party presidential nominee. But throughout it all, she’s kept her guard up. TIME waded through the archives of photographs that span Clinton’s life to catch a glimpse of some of the moments behind the scenes.
