## Transcript

>> Hi. I'm Joe Klein. I'm TIME's political columnist and I am doing politics. I'm doing it for the entire month of September. I got this big wide SUV that looks like a refrigerator and I'm gonna drive across the country. Today I was in the Philadelphia area and this is Allentown watching 3 different candidates for Congress campaign, do handshaking, listening to the folks, seeing what they're concerned about.

>> My opponent and I have very different views on that.

>> I'm voting against it.

>> Glad to meet you.

>> That's what I'm gonna be doing for the next 3- 1 / 2 weeks, not just with the candidates but a lot of my readers and a lot of you may wanna invite me into your homes and meet with your families, tell me about the people you really respect in your communities. I like to talk to them too. I wanna get a better sense of what's really happening in the country.

>> Often times I hear the same things. It's concerns about the economy, the unsustainability of the spending and their concern about the long- term debt that our nation is facing.

>> I had to send a signal to Washington that we want our voice heard again. I hope to be your candidate for that.

>> And this is the very first stop of our cross- country tour and it's a perfect stop. It's Labor Day and we're down to the basic essentials of politics, a candidate going door to door, in this case a Republican candidate and a swing district could go either way.

>> I'm gonna lead you that so you can talk to your neighbors and friends.

>> Yes.

>> The most important thing to know about politics is how tedious it is almost all the time. There are very few peak moments. If you're a candidate, it's just doing the same thing over and over again and that's what Pat Meehan is doing right over there. Going door to door and talking to people and actually making a personal connection is good in 2 ways. They say a person as opposed to somebody that they just know from television but second, I get a chance sometimes to listen to them. They tell me more about what's on their mind. Some will talk, some will not. It gives me a chance to make a personal connection with people in an environment where they're comfortable talking.

>> Absolutely. Thank you.

>> And then the next candidate I visited was Mike Fitzpatrick who was defeated in 2006 and is now running for his old seat.

>> I'm hoping to meet as many residents of the district Bucks County and Northeast Philadelphia and Eastern Montgomery County to be able to talk to them about their concerns in 2010 with the midterm elections.

>> And he was defeated by a young Iraq war veteran who is opposed to the war. That was the big issue in 2006. 2010 is the economy and Fitzpatrick is hoping to get back in.

>> About November 2nd, right?

>> November 2nd, let's go.

>> Okay.

>> You too.

>> Thank you.

>> And here in Allentown my third stop you have a really fascinating situation because you have a very attractive young Democratic candidate who is a challenger. He's not the incumbent. He's the mayor of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He's had a very successful run there by all accounts, brought in new jobs, new investment.

>> It is time for a change.

>> I think so.

>> You look at what's going on in Washington right now and are their income. The biggest say really right now is start worrying about the middle class people.

>> I just thought that oh.

>> And he's running against a pretty standard issue Republican who in normal times because of the Republican tie this year you think would be a pretty safe bet, but he's an incumbent and he voted for the bailouts and the bailouts this year are an issue that is cutting as close to the bone as any that we're facing, so 3 different races, 2 different situations, the beginning of a long, strange trip.
