Few people have dominated their sport in the way that Reggie Jackson dominated baseball. He's here to talk about, among other things, his new book, Mr. October. Mr. Jackson welcome. Thank you so much. So you already written a biography, why, why this book? I wrote this book because I wanted to set, I guess a story straight on the what was it called, The Bronx is Burning miniseries by ESPN. I was offended by it. And so, I thought I would write my view, my story. They had theirs. It disappointed me. I was embarrassed by it. So I thought I would take my turn and, and talk about what I thought was important during that era. You say in, in the book that you think a lot of people have forgotten the fight. Have forgotten the struggle that you guys went through. Is that a healthy sign? I think it's part of moving forward of forgetting. At the same time I know, my daughter doesn't know what I went through, doesn't understand it. She's a mixed child, 22 years old but she doesn't understand, hasn't felt it or experienced it. Doesn't know the make- up of people from my era and the fact that it's part of us. Last year just 8 % of the opening roster of the Major League Baseball teams were African American, way down from, you know, the 70s and 80s when you were playing. Why aren't more African Americans I, I don't have an answer for that. Certainly I've talked to our commissioner about it. And, you know, cer -, there's an effort, I believe in Major League Baseball will try to rectify it, with all the issues and problems that they have. They don't have the issues, they don't have the issues in football or basketball and we all know, and it's easy to see that. You can't have a pickup game of baseball necessarily in your neighborhood, because you need 18 people. But you certainly can have a three on three basketball game, or a two on two basketball game, or one on one basketball game. And there's a significant cost to the traveling baseball teams and the club baseball teams that they have, for the eight year old, 12 year old, 14 year old, if you will, to travel around the country. That's not gonna happen in a minority community. So you say in the book that the Mets didn't draft you because you were date -, dating a Mexican girl. Do you think that has changed? That kind of, do people care so much about that now? You know I, my college coach at the time said, it was thought that, not thought but told me that the Mets would pass, because they thought I could be a social problem for their organization. And so, to speak about it, it's not comfortable for me, and it's not comfortable to hear it, but it happened, and it was. So, you spoke a little bit about, a bit before about you know, several of the problems of baseball. And I wonder if you've ever thought about whether you'd like to be baseball commissioner. Sure I'd like the job. Why not? What would you fix? How would you fix? Well, I don't know if I'd fix anything but certainly focus on, mine certainly would be, you know, catering to minorities and how you do it and how you go about it. The, the game right now regardless of what, you know, pe -, if they wanna give Bud Selig credit or not, the game is in pretty good stead right now. Can you explain what you do for the Yankees? I do what I'm told to do. [ LAUGH ]. And I do what I'm asked to do. Alright, so day to day, what does that look like? Day to day, I don't work every day. I probably give the Yankees about 70 days a year, 60 to 70 days a year, but mostly look at the talent of the players and try to help where I can. But who do you think is the best baseball player in baseball right now? I would probably go to Miguel Cabrera with the Tigers. Is there a player right now, maybe it's the same guy, who reminds you of you? I, I guess maybe I like to think of myself as a Jeter type. A guy that always played well when it counted and was always there all the time and you know, good teammate. Have you ever disappointed yourself? But I kind of wonder sometimes if I, you know, would have gone a different path or maybe became a baseball manager or a baseball executive. Or a business guy which, and I enjoy all those things, I and at the same time I'm not regretful of anything because of, I've such a nice life. And I've probably missed a mate, a female mate where I've kinda made mistakes or wasn't quite ready at the time to be with a person. So I've probably missed out on that a little bit, but things ain't bad, I'll say. I'm, I'm, I'm doing alright. Mr. Jackson, thanks so much. Thank you, Belinda.
