In hopes of giving the country some sense of normalcy, Haiti's education ministry called for classes to resume in early April. Many schools were still too damaged or otherwise unready to reopen. But this school on the outskirts of Port- au- Prince was ready. >> It's also important after the earthquake I think to have that sense of community come back and to have that sense of normalcy. >> Classes here have begun in donated tents next to the quake- damaged schoolhouse. Supporters of the school rushed to open it, but not only just to start teaching again-- >> For us, it's about building a community, about giving people an opportunity and an option other than just standing around in the streets, and so with our schools it was very important to get tents set up right away. As you saw, we were-- we have tents right away so that even if school wasn't in session we can have day camps and daycare facilities going on. >> Bryn Mooser is the country director with Artists for Peace and Justice, a group that has several projects in the works in Haiti. It's teaming up with another group, Architecture for Humanity to redesign and rebuild a cluster of schools here. >> We found that if you put up a good school, people resettle a community. It's the germ that starts the community. Parents will come back once their kids are in school and they don't have to worry about them during the day, they'll go back to work. They don't have to watch their kids. They know their kids are safe. The schools often double as various community functions, a disaster shelter or community center at night, an internet café, just a place for people to gather. It's necessary to provide shelter but we've always found that keep starting the rebuilding effort, the resettlement effort happens around these community spaces. >> This school project is funded in part by StillerStrong, a charity created by comic actor and director Ben Stiller who had an interest in helping the people of Haiti before the devastating earthquake. >> When he first visited Haiti over a year ago, he-- he was really struck and really felt the desire to help and I think education is a place that we all can really give our time and our energy and our funds to make a difference. >> The groups have big plans for this 15- acre parcel of land. They say this green pasture will become a campus for as many students as they can serve from kindergarten through grade 13. To build that campus and to repair and rebuild Haiti's schools throughout the country, designers face many challenges according to Architecture for Humanity's Regional Program Manager Eric Cesal. >> I can't think of five places on earth that have to deal with large earthquakes and frequent hurricanes. It's a rare intersection of disasters, but it happens here. You add in the economic component and what you got is a very very tough design problem. >> Cesal says rebuilding means an opportunity to train nations in better techniques to build stronger and longer lasting buildings. >> The Haitian construction relies a lot on concrete and concrete block. So, teaching the best practices is also a significant challenge. >> In an upstairs room in the damaged school, one class learns fractions in a Math lesson. While in the next room, a student reads aloud in French. It only takes a few minutes with these eager students to see what drives volunteers to help them.
