## Transcript

>> This is our 500 and first show.

>> 7 years ago, Joe DeGeorge and his older brother Paul wanted live music for a barbeque. When the bands they booked didn't show up, they decided in a flash to form their own.

>> Show them your tongue. Yeah.

>> Did you see that? That was rock and roll.

>> He makes my life a saddest thing--

>> And if you listen to the lyrics of this show in Brooklyn, you can glee in their magical inspiration.

>> I am Harry Potter. Sing that with us.

>> Sat down on the kitchen table and I like, let's do that Harry and the Potters idea. So, we just got together and banged out about 7 songs that morning and then play them later on for our friends. And my idea just kinda snowballed.

>> They named themselves, " Harry and the Potters ". The DeGeorges didn't realize it that they had just invented a new kind of music. It's now known as Wizard Rock or sometimes just Wrock, with a silent W.

>> All right, this song is called " The New Wizard Anthem ". And I need some help just sing along from you guys. It's pretty simple, when I say wizard I need you to say Rock. Can we try that?

>> Yeah.

>> I said Wizard.

>> Rock.

>> Wizard.

>> Rock.

>> Wizard.

>> Rock.

>> Wizard

>> Rock.

>> Wizard.

>> Rock

>> Wizard.

>> Rock.

>> Wizard. I wanna rock. I am a wizard.

>> Imagine if Harry Potter quit the Quidditch Team and travelled back in time and started a band with his younger self. And that sort of encapsulates our band.

>> Good evening ladies and gentlemen. My name is Harry Potter.

>> And my name is Harry Potter.

>> We are Harry the Potters.

>> Wizard rock is pretty much what it sounds like, rock and roll inspired by and set in the universe of Harry Potter or Harry and the Potters. The themes of their music are the themes of the books. Love and friendship, angst and struggle. Their beat is decidedly punk.

>> My teacher is a werewolf. He's liable to bite someone in class. That would be so bad. He's been locked inside the Shrieking Shack.

>> Harry Potter is the sort of character that he's not afraid to question authority or organized against it. So, it seems only natural that he'd be a punk rocker.

>> Are you petrified of being petrified? Are we going to have to save the school again?

>> We've got to save Giny Weasley from the basilisk.

>> Paul on guitar and Joe on keyboards, dressed in white shirts and orange and red stripe Gryffindor ties. They have a rotating cast of drummers ala spinal tap and are occasionally joined on stage by the giant squid that lives in the Hogwarts Lake.

>> You must have heard us practicing.

>> Well, since that first show we've been touring all over the country, you know. Once-- once people started to find out about our band, you know, the magic of the internet. So we just kind of like, you know, got on our parents' minivan and started touring around the country playing in libraries and basements and backyards and clubs and anything that came my way.

>> They are so good at telling stories. They're so much fun, you know. They never failed to give a great performance.

>> I was at LeakyCon about a month ago and they have this song that's about bacon and then they passed out bacon in the crowd.

>> I've only seen them twice, in every single time they were mind blowing.

>> Hagrid is fun to hug.

>> The DeGeorges said they have now played more than 500 shows in 49 states. And in the 7 years, since that fateful barbecue that launched Harry and the Potters, dozens of wizard rock bands have formed.

>> Just don't get stuck in Hagrid's beard. Hagrid is fun to hug. Hagrid is full of love. Just don't get stuck in Hagrid's beard. Hey.

>> A few years ago after we have been touring for awhile, a bunch of bands started springing up on MySpace and you know, creating profiles and uploading music and it became the sort of small like sub genre.

>> Off stage, Joe's a physics major, entering his senior year in college. He recently finished an internship at NASA. Paul, now 30 years old, calls himself a fulltime wizard and devotes his time to managing the band. He also hopes to leverage their success in to social action; asking, " What would Dumbledore do ?"

>> I helped co- found a non- profit organization called " The Harry Potter Alliance ". And that's aimed at, you know, taking this enthusiasm around the Harry Potter books and translating it into like social justice and activist issues in our own world.

>> The last of the Harry Potter books was published in 2007. But new readers are still discovering their charms and new listeners are giving in to the spell of wizard rock.

>> You may have been like a 10 year old kid and read the first book and then, by the time the final book comes out you're 18 or something. So you've grown up and a lot of our fans have grown up too and maybe they've moved on, but there's definitely been some who've been there stuck with us or a lot who are new.

>> There's still gonna be like half that crowd who's never seen us play. So it's cool that there's still people who are coming and who are new to it, you know, even after 500 shows.

>> Harry and the Potters say good night.

>> For Time. com, I've Lev Grossman.

>> I am Harry Potter. Sing it with us. I am Harry Potter.
