## Transcript

Hi, this is Rebecca Keegan with Time.com. I'm here with Sarah Silverman, comedian and author of the new memoir The Bedwetter Stories of Courage, Redemption and Pee. Hey, Sarah, thanks for being with us. Thank you. So I have a lot of questions from time readers today for you. And the first one is from Joe in Santa Barbara, California, who asks, What made you want to write a book about such personal topics, such as bedwetting? Well, Joe Shattuck writing Dear Joe, I decided to write a book about personal things because that's pretty much what I talk about. I think as a comedian, you're kind of an open book and I think the stories I tell are I think I have a bunch of stories that are interesting, like I thought I would want to read a I would want to read these stories.

You know, so that was kind of the gauge I went by. And I do have a lot of really good stories. I think it's subjective, but I feel that way. So the time felt right, and then I did it. Joe The next question comes from Cape Town, South Africa. Wow. Yeah. The question is, does your family think you're funny? Could you do that in a Cape Town accent? I can't. My family does think I'm funny, but my whole family is funny. So it's. I don't think they're, like, blown away by me. I think I'm kind of one of. I'm one among them as really weird, funny family. And they're all they all have kind of, you know, it's like.

It's like coming from a vaudeville family, only we were in retail. Michael Lawrence in Nashville wants to know what comedians inspired you to go into comedy. Steve Martin was. I grew up just idolizing him. I loved his stand up and watching him on Saturday Night Live, you know, hosting and his movies. And I just I was so in love with him. I had never really left New Hampshire. But I you know, he reached obviously so many people and then it's funny because, like I would read every article I could find about him and I read that he loved this painter, David Hockney, at the L.A. County Museum. And I, like sent away for a calendar of David Hockney paintings.

And so I was like, this little girl in New Hampshire with this muse, like paintings of like gay men in swimming pools all over her room because Steve Martin liked it. You know, Albert Brooks, my loved the way he brought being very plain and very real and wearing kind of your insecurities on your sleeve, you know, into comedy. I mean, Woody Allen, too, of course, And then his movies, you know, I just they really floated my boat. But I loved the absurdity of of Steve Martin. The next question comes from Sydney, Australia. What's the appeal of provocative comedy? I don't know that it's for me to answer.

What's the appeal of provocative comedy? Well, I think what makes comedy provocative is if it makes you think. And I think anything is more interesting when it's provocative. I mean, you know. This question comes from Anna Smith in Toronto. I think a lot of people maybe want to know the answer to this. She says, I would also like Matt Damon. Do you have any advice for those of us aspiring to do so? Um. I don't. I wish I could say that we're old pals. He's the nicest person. I mean, really just the coolest guy ever. But I have to say, it's not like I have his phone number or anything, you know, or even his email.

We shot that in 4 hours. I had a great time with him. I'm Matt Damon. My name is. I'm Matt Damon. This is Matt Damon. And every once in a while, Sam and something will give me a nice little hug, but I don't really know him so well. But I'm a huge fan, and I think he's awesome. And yeah, maybe write a funny song. And I don't know. I don't know how it is. Have sex with Matt Damon. You'd have to ask his wife. This question comes from Paul in Washington. Because of your profession, is it hard for people to take what you say seriously? I mean, I do like to be silly. You know? I'm not like this brooding, serious person off off camera.

But, you know, we're just trying to have a conversation and people are like, hey, you know, or or even just trying to be nice like I do. You can I swear? Do you bleep things? I don't know, like. But what's this where policy for time. Where I'll say to a friend, you know, like, I love your dress and, you know, I'm just like, I'm trying to just tell you I like your dress. Go. Why would I go? Like I like your dress? Nice dress. Yeah, I think that's really my style. But I think sometimes people's defenses are up or something. Last question is from A.J. Gupta in Grayslake, Illinois, who asks If Sarah Palin asked you to be her running mate in 2012, what will your response be?

No, thank you. Okay, that's it. Yay! Yay!
