Former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has died at the age of 85. He had defended and led the state of Israel for more than 60 years. Sharon's condition had deteriorated in recent days after suffering from kidney trouble. The doctors at Tel Hashomer Hospital had said a number of vital organs were suffering from critical malfunction. Sharon had been comatose since the stroke in January of 2006. He is one of Israel's best known generals, known by some as the Bulldozer for his aggressive style. In a pivotal maneuver during the 1973 Yom Kippur war, an Israel force under his leadership encircled and trapped part of the Egyptian army.

But he was a controversial figure as well. Opponents called him the Butcher of Beirut after he orchestrated the invasion of Lebanon that left hundreds of Lebanese civilians dead. That well he served as Israeli Defense Minister, a position from which he resigned after a commission found him indirectly responsible for that 1982 massacre. Still, he went on to serve many top positions within Israeli government including Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Energy and Water Resources, Minister of Housing and Construction and Minister of Industry, Trade and Labor. He became Israel's 11th Prime Minister in 2001 under the conservative Likud Party before he formed the centrist Kadima Party in 2005.

And he shocked many when he pulled thousands of Israeli settlers and all Israeli soldiers from the Gaza Strip in 2005. Many expected he would win reelection easily before a stroke and brain hemorrhage in 2006 put him in a vegetative state for the next 8 years. In January of 2013, tests showed surprising brain activity in the comatose former Prime Minister, but the possibility of a full recovery had long been ruled out.
