## Transcript

>> Anti- government protest in Thailand's capital city Bangkok saw a sharp increase in violence over the weekend with 1 dead and 67 injured just within the last 3 days. Dozens were injured Sunday after 2 explosions went off at an opposition rally in Bangkok. Authorities released this video of a man they believe to be a suspect. He can be seen throwing an object and running away moments before an explosion. Sunday's attack comes just 2 days after a similar bombing in which a grenade was hurled to the direction of anti- government protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban who has led protestors shutdown Bangkok through demonstrations.

28 were injured and 1 person died in that attack. 9 people have been killed and more than 500 injured as protestors have carried out anti- government demonstrations against Yingluck Shinawatra, Thailand's first female prime minister since November. The opposition accuses her of running a puppet regime on behalf of her exiled brother and former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and is calling for her to step down. Shinawatra dissolved parliament last month and called for new elections on February 2nd in an effort to resolve the situation, but the opposition plans to boycott that election, instead saying they want to get rid of anyone who has been influenced by Thaksin.

Observers believe the upsurge violence may be an attempt to provoke an intervention by the powerful armed forces TIME wrote. Thailand has seen 18 actual or attempted military coups since the end of absolute monarchy in 1932. Opposition leaders have called for the military support. So far, the army chief has not taken sides in the conflict. For TIME, I'm Christian Bryan.
