## Transcript

>> Signs of an early spring have popped up on New York's Upper East Side. A public art installation has transformed snowy Park Avenue into a metallic garden of flowers and vines called, simply, " The Roses ."

>> I wanted to choose colors that would really pop out of the background, the wintry background. I wanted it to be kind of uplifting because, you know, why not? A lot of my work is not so uplifting. More than anything, though, it was the contrast between those-- the colors of the-- of the piece to the New York City background, especially in the winter time.

>> But Ryman says the inspiration for " The Roses" came from a somewhat darker source.

>> The opening shot in Blue Velvet, David Lynch's film. The opening shot is of the American Dream. You know, the white picket fence, the beautiful American family house, the camera slowly pans down to the landscape garden. And then, the camera continues to pan down into this dark underworld, which is what the whole movie is about, this dark underworld in Suburbia. That stuck with me, and that's where I got the idea to initially raise the scale-- add bugs, make the stems crazy and wild like they're dancing. And that's where the idea came from.

>> Installing the roses kept Ryman working all night and well into the next day with temperatures that stayed in the low teen.

>> Last night was when we installed all the-- all the rose blossom and the big sculptures that are on the Avenue. It was bad, it was quite 10 degrees, I would say, maybe worse, maybe colder. Right now, I'm a little numb from head to toe, you know. I can't feel my toes. My toes are tingling.

>> Despite the hard work and cold weather, Ryman is happy with how the installation turned out, and especially with how it fits in with its Upper East Side neighborhood.

>> I wanted to make this installation have a dialog with people in the-- in high up in the buildings, as well. Because I think in a lot of public art that I've seen, my opinion is that it gets swallowed up by the city around that, you know, you have to use your environment to the best of its ability. And you can't fight it. I think a lot of public art fights-- aesthetically, it fights its environment.

>> For Time video, I'm Megan Gibson.
