## Transcript

An important piece of the Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare, is starting. Here's what you need to know. New Obamacare, insurance marketplaces, called Exchanges, are now open in every state. The exchanges, will allow individuals and some small businesses, to shop, compare, and purchase private health insurance. An open enrollment period for the exchanges will last, until March 31 for coverage that begins in 2014. [ MUSIC ] The only Americans eligible, to buy health insurance through these new exchanges, are those who aren't already covered by federal insurance programs, like Medicare or Medicaid and those who don't get affordable health insurance through their work.

If you're uninsured and earn up to about $ 45, 000 a year, you may be able to shop at an Obama Care Insurance Exchange and access new federal subsidies, that will reduce or cover the cost of your health insurance. Health Insurance, insurers are prohibited, from discriminating against consumers in the Obama Care exchanges. So, if you have a preexisting health condition, you won't pay more than a healthy person.
