Yman is just one of hundreds of new patients arriving at the hospital, which serves the eastern half of the country-- an area that has been bombed, rocketed, and fought over for almost two months. -[ Foreign language ] >> The inpatient capacity has been stretched from 350 to 450-- even though staff is down over 50 percent, and medication is running low. To make matters worse, the stress that the fighting has inflicted on the civilian population is beginning to take its toll. More and more patients are arriving every day, suffering from mental illnesses such as acute stress reaction and post traumatic stress disorder. >> Yeah. This is one of our sections here. It's open now. People are-- >> The director, Dr. Ali Elroey, founded the hospital over 20 years ago. >> Come with me. That-- this is made Section A, by the way. >> He treats patients from cities like Ra's Lanuf, Brega, Ajdabiya, and Misrata, that have experienced attacks by the rebels, loyalists, and even NATO. >> The people who watched this event, usually, they develop severe stress disorders. The current situation, we have a lot of people coming to our outpatient clinic because of the stress they are facing, lots of the so- called the neurotic stress problems among young people, even children. -[ Foreign language ] >> The senior female psychologist at the hospital is the first doctor to see Yman. -[ Foreign language ] -[ Foreign language ] >> Okay. Okay. -[ Foreign language ] >> Yman is eventually diagnosed with agitated depression, and released into her mother's care. But the worry for the doctors is how many more cases like Yman's there will be. >> If the-- this conflict continuing takes months and so on, the number of people coming here are expected to be increasing. >> A 2001 World Health Organization study estimates that 20 percent of people who experience traumatic events will develop debilitating conditions. As the war drags on into yet another week, the number of civilians damaged by the violence will only rise.
